Worth Keeping?

Worth Keeping?
How many shirts have you thrown out in the past year?
I'll be honest with you, I used to spend hours online searching for shirts that I could keep in my closet for a long time, only to be sucked into sales and the idea of buying "more" shirts, for the price of one quality piece. Does this sound like you too?

That's what led me to create Fern & Main. I was tired of spending money on things that didn't last, and I figured I wasn't alone in that. I wanted to be the woman who sourced clothing for my own closet, as well as the closet of other women who are like me.

Learning about slow fashion changed my shopping habits:
The thing that nobody talks about: cheap clothes are often way more expensive in the long run. Here's why... if you buy a $15 top and replace it three times a year, that's $45. But a well-made top for $55 that you wear for three years? That's the better deal, every time.

So what did I actually start looking for?
I started to slow down a little when I shopped, whether in person or online. I began to feel the fabric. Does it have some weight to it? I looked for natural fibers like cotton, wool, or linen on labels. And asked myself the big question: "Could I see myself wearing this two years from now?" If the answer is yes, I know it is worth it to make the purchase.

You don't have to get rid of your entire closet.
I'd suggest small changes one at a time. I'd first work on taking a look at what you already have in your closet and assessing what your future needs will be, as far as creating outfits that you feel great about. When you find the missing pieces, that is when you begin to look for one quality piece (ex. a basic tee, button down top, etc.) that will stay in your closet for years, rather than making several quick purchases.

That's what I'm doing here with Fern & Main.
Every piece I find, I ask myself: is this something I'd actually wear? Is it worth keeping? If the answer isn't a clear yes, I don't buy it. I find myself doing more research on the products that I want to carry. It is teaching me to be a better shopper in my own life, and is giving me a greater appreciation for quality clothes that will last in my own closet, as well as yours.
